EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
